about
Based on Aesop's fable of the same name, 'The Spendthrift and the Swallow' is a song-writing collaboration between Rachel Elizabeth (formerly Fern) and Juniperus (Jeffrey Popiel).
lyrics
The snow had just gone, defeated by Spring.
A gambling man speaks with a bird as it sings,
“I’ve lost all my money. I’ve only my coat and everything else I’ve already sold”
Oh, spender, spender
the Fault is your own (a foolhardy throw)
your possessions are gone, you haven’t a home.
He’d taken his rest by the old cedar tree
when he noticed the swallow his head rose with glee.
Took the bird as a signal that summer was nigh,
put his coat up for sale (he wasted no time).
When he arose the next morning, to his chill and surprise
the frost had come back his choice was unwise.
Then he saw his mistake in the swallow’s demise.
Oh, spender, spender
the Fault is your own (a foolhardy throw),
for the winter’s not gone from the poor swallow’s bones.
Spender, spender.
